Four Devon Army Cadets and a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer enjoyed a five-day sailing expedition aboard the historic sailing vessel the Boleh. The group navigated the Solent as part of their Royal Yacht Academy (RYA) Competent Crew training.
Their journey began in Haslar and included stops in East Cowes, Southampton, Lymington, and a last night meal at the Folly Inn. It offered hands-on experience in seamanship, navigation, and teamwork.
Throughout the week, cadets practised essential skills such as man overboard drills, anchoring, knot tying, and tender handling. Despite varying wind conditions, they demonstrated resilience and enthusiasm, even reaching speeds of 7.5 knots en route to Cowes. The voyage concluded with a celebratory meal and the presentation of RYA certificates. This marked a successful and inspiring chapter in their maritime journey.
Reflecting on the expedition’s impact, the cadets and their mentors highlight the profound benefits of this unique experience. The journey not only enhanced their technical sailing abilities but also fostered personal growth, resilience, and teamwork. Each year, the Boleh Trust sailing trip sets a new benchmark for success, and this year is no exception.

Cpl Findley Richardson from Tavistock Detachment said, “I learnt how to steer the ship, tie knots anchoring and being a part of a team. The part I enjoyed the most was the steering and gaining my RYA Competent Crew qualification.”
Colour Sergeant Jeff Shaw said of the voyage, “I’ve developed my teamwork skills whilst being on the boat. It has been enjoyable being a part of such a close-knit environment.”
Captain Matthew Sanders from Devon Army Cadet Force said, “On behalf of our cadets and adults, we would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to The Boleh Trust for delivering an unforgettable expedition.”
“This extraordinary experience provided our young participants with the opportunity to forge new friendships, enhance their skills, and immerse themselves in an exciting new activity. Every individual involved walked away enriched, inspired, and deeply appreciative of this remarkable journey.”
Captain Matthew Sanders
He continues, “Devon ACF is committed to providing opportunities for young people to explore the world of sailing and develop valuable life skills. We look forward to many more successful expeditions in the future, continuing to empower and inspire the next generation of sailors.”
Helping to make this trip possible, Devon ACF has received financial support from ACCT UK, and from the Ulysses Trust. Their invaluable support underscores the importance of providing young cadets with enriching and educational experiences… Not just on land but at sea as well!

The Boleh Trust is dedicated to preserving and operating the historic vessel Boleh. It offers unique sailing experiences that promote seamanship, teamwork, and personal development. The Trust aims to inspire and educate young people, fostering a love for the sea and maritime heritage.
