What is the British Citizen Youth Award?

The British Citizen Youth Award (BCyA) recognises individuals aged 18 and under, who positively impact others and highlight the positive aspects of communities, schools and places of education, community groups, charities and specific causes throughout the UK.

In 2025, its ninth year, the BCyA has today honoured 22 young people from across the UK that have made a positive impact on their communities and wider society. These selfless young people have shown kindness and commitment to a multitude of causes, raising funds and awareness, and are all dedicated to making a difference. Each inspirational young person has been presented with the BCyA Medal of Honour at The Palace of Westminster. They are now invited to use the post-nominals ‘BCyA’, as a legacy of their achievements and endeavours.

Luke Hedley from Durham ACF, is one of the 2025 BCyA Roll of Honour Recipients.

Luke’s Project

In January, Luke used his Christmas and pocket money to purchase a 3D printer, with one clear purpose… To make a difference. Inspired by his father, a volunteer ranger, Luke began creating 3D-printed safety whistles to support the #BeAdventureSmart campaign and Northumberland National Park MRT (Mountain Rescue Team). This campaign encourages safety and preparedness in the outdoors. After securing the relevant permissions, Luke started selling the whistles, and in six months, produced 740 whistles, raising £1,650.

The whistles are used by organisations and local wellbeing businesses, with additional events and collaborations planned. Luke donated 45 whistles to Northumberland MRT. Beyond his whistle project, Luke has completed an annual half-marathon twice, raising further funds for Langdale & Ambleside MRT, in memory of a neighbour’s son.

Small Whistles, Big Impact

Luke’s charity fundraising project has quickly developed into a highly successful and impactful initiative. From its humble beginnings, the project has grown into a widely recognised effort that has touched the lives of many and inspired others. Driven by a strong desire to make a difference, Luke dedicated countless hours to planning, promoting, and delivering meaningful campaigns that not only raised funds but also increased awareness of his chosen causes.

Congratulations to Luke and all the BCyA recipients!

The BCyA Medal of Honour is presented to only a small number of exceptional young individuals annually. The British Citizen Youth Award is widely viewed as the nation’s way of recognising extraordinary, everyday young people for exceptional endeavour and is open to any person aged 18 or under who is committed to helping others.

“We are delighted to be able to recognise these amazing individuals with a BCyA. It is both heartening and uplifting to know that so many young people are consciously contributing to causes such as the environment, climate change, education, and creating awareness and fundraising for hospitals, medical research and charities. The youth of today are truly the leaders of tomorrow.”

Mike Faulkner, Director of the BCyA
