Army Cadet Sailing Expedition Sets Sail for Success

Ten Army Cadets from across the South West, alongside two adult volunteers, have completed a six-day Army Cadet sailing expedition along the south coast of England. Supported by ACCT UK, they gained Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Competent Crew qualifications while developing teamwork, resilience and leadership skills at sea.
The journey, which began in Portsmouth, included stops in Cowes, Portland, Weymouth and Yarmouth and offered hands-on experience in seamanship, navigation, and teamwork. Throughout the week, cadets practised essential skills such as man overboard drills, anchoring, knot tying, and tender handling. Despite varying wind conditions, they demonstrated resilience and enthusiasm throughout the duration of their expedition. The voyage concluded with the presentation of RYA certificates, marking a successful and inspiring chapter in their maritime journey.
Reflecting on the expedition’s impact, the cadets and their mentors highlight the profound benefits of this unique experience. The journey not only enhances their technical sailing abilities but also fosters personal growth, resilience, and teamwork. In addition to achieving their Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Competent Crew qualification, cadets and adult volunteers also completed elements of their Army Cadet syllabus training in adventurous training and their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award residential.
