Bristol and Channel Islands’ Weighted Stretcher Walk Raises Over £500 for ACCT UK

Bristol and Channel Islands ACF: weighted stretcher walk fundraiser

Stretching their limits…

Last Sunday, 19 cadets and a handful of dedicated adult volunteers from C Company, Bristol and Channel Islands ACF, took on the challenge of a 10-mile weighted stretcher walk. Their efforts raised an impressive £500 in support of ACCT UK, despite the heavy rain that accompanied them every step of the way.

The day brought more than physical endurance. It was a true test of teamwork and determination. As Cadet Daniel Cox reflected, “The event opened my eyes to how much the ACF means to people.”

And although the weather was far from ideal, with relentless downpours throughout the route, morale stayed high. Wildlife was abundant along the way… squirrels, deer, rabbits, and swans. There was also an occasional bramble, which managed to knock a few berets off as the group pushed forward!

Meaning and Motivation

The idea for this fundraiser was born from a simple desire to do something meaningful for the community. After discussing it at a detachment meeting, the cadets decided on a stretcher walk. Both ACCT UK and the Royal British Legion hold personal significance to the group. They therefore decided to support both charities through their efforts.

Preparation was essential. Captain Harell from 243 Field Hospital gave the cadets vital training on lifting and lowering the stretcher. They also learned how to smoothly transition between four-man and two-man teams. This ensured that everyone was equipped to handle the physical demands of the walk.

A Sense of Achievement

For many, the walk was a challenge, but it was also an unforgettable experience. “The walk was tiring at times but overall was a great experience for us all,” shared Cadet Lance Corporal Aya Mansri. The sense of achievement and camaraderie that developed over those 10 miles was as strong as the rain that beat down on them.

Cadet Corporal Theo Knight, one of the event’s organisers, expressed his pride in the team’s accomplishment.

“It was amazing to see this go from plan to actually getting out and walking it. Despite the heavy rain, morale remained high, and we not only completed the 10 miles but also surpassed our fundraising goal.”

The event is a perfect example of the community spirit and resilience that the Army Cadets fosters in its members. We at ACCT UK extend our heartfelt thanks to every cadet and volunteer who took part. Their dedication helps ensure that future cadets will continue to benefit from the many opportunities offered through the Army Cadets programme.
