Molly – Young Army Cadet

Army Cadet Molly MacLoughlin (14) took part in a Battlefield Tour which changed the way she thought about life

Battlefield Tour

It was such an honour to have the opportunity to have such an extraordinary experience, to remember those who had fallen and make our mark in history for the 100th anniversary.’

SGT Molly MacLoughlin, an Army Cadet from Essex ACF, was funded by ACCT UK to travel to the Somme battle grounds, Serre road cemetery and Thiepval memorial in order to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice contract in WW1.

We were taken to a small country lane and sat along the sides of the road, a picture was then given to us of soldiers that at one point sat exactly where we were sitting just moments before they went out to fight and lost their lives. This is something that had never crossed our minds before to think that the very ground you walk across was once the last place British soldiers saw before they were sadly taken by the war.’

After seeing all the names on Thiepval Memorial of all the brave soldiers whose bodies were never recovered, it really made us realise how lucky we are to live the way we do nowadays as free people. Due to those thousands of men and women, we won the war and live the way we do in true British fashion, something to bear in mind and always be proud of.

I would personally like to thank the ACCT who made this trip possible, it was truly one of the best experiences I have ever had and I am so honoured to have been part of it.’
