ACCT UK are pleased to have been able to partially fund a series of transformative sailing expeditions for Devon cadets. These voyages took place throughout the summer of 2024. They offered cadets and adult volunteers unique opportunities to:
The impact of these sailing expeditions on the cadets and volunteers has been extraordinary. Over the course of three weeks, participants embarked on various sailing adventures aboard the Boleh Trust boat. Each excursion was tailored to different experience levels.
For many, the highlight was an unforgettable five-day journey from Gosport across the challenging waters of the English Channel. This experience pushed them out of their comfort zones and into a world of maritime adventure.
During their time aboard, the crew immersed themselves in a hands-on learning environment. They mastered essential maritime skills, including:
– Seamanship rules
– Maritime safety protocols
– Navigation techniques
– Safe vessel manoeuvres
However, the benefits extended far beyond technical abilities. The transformation in these young people is remarkable.
Operations Director, Craig Coupe of the Boleh Project said:
“The cadets embraced every day, were focused and willing to learn, allowing them to pass their RYA Competent Crew course – all in all a cracking week!”
The shared challenges of life at sea created an ideal environment for fostering teamwork and resilience. Cadets learned to rely on each other, communicate effectively, and overcome obstacles together.
The group formed strong bonds and worked as a team. They shared stories and experiences, building confidence and camaraderie.
Captain Kevin Found, Adventurous Training Officer for Devon Army Cadets emphasized the long-term benefits of these expeditions.
“The cadets have benefited immensely from their time on Boleh, and this journey will leave a lasting impression on their lives.”
ACCT UK’s support plays a crucial role in making these experiences accessible to a diverse range of young people, regardless of their background or financial situation.
These sailing expeditions exemplify the power of adventurous training in shaping the leaders of tomorrow. By supporting initiatives like this, ACCT UK continues to invest in the personal development and future success of cadets across the country.
