Empowering Adventure and Growth for Hereford and Worcester ACF Cadets

20 March 2024

Between February 10th and 17th, 2024, Hereford and Worcester Army Cadet Force (HWACF) embarked on a ski expedition, “Exercise Venturer Snow cub,” in the Pyrenees. This marked HWACF’s inaugural skiing endeavour, made possible through collaboration with the civilian company, Inspireski. The successful execution of this trip sets the stage for future skiing activities, fostering a passion for the sport among cadets and adult volunteers members in the county.

ACCT UK grant facilitated the participation of 43 cadets in an enriching experience, encompassing guided ski instruction, cultural exchanges with Spanish and English peers, and indulgence in Spanish cuisine. For many cadets, this trip marked their first international travel experience, transcending financial barriers with a manageable contribution of £380 per cadet.

Cadet Cpl Michael Cook highlighted the significance of such opportunities, emphasising the affordability and accessibility granted by ACCT UK’s support. Parents echoed these sentiments, grateful for the staggered payment options facilitated by HWACF, making the trip feasible for their children.

Fundraising efforts, predominantly overseen by the Hereford and Worcester ACF Charitable Trust, played a crucial role in supplementing the costs. Through initiatives like fundraising lunches, musical events, and Christmas carol performances, over £30K was raised, underscoring the community’s commitment to empowering youth experiences.

Cadets embraced the ski instruction wholeheartedly. With additional instructors provided to accommodate varying skill levels, every cadet found their footing on the slopes. Overcoming fears of falling and heights, they triumphantly navigated the mountains, showcasing remarkable personal growth and resilience.

‘ACCT UK’s support has changed young people’s lives. I have made new friends, both Spanish and English, I can now ski which is something I never thought I would be able to do and I feel that I have developed communication skills too as there are people on the trip that I have never met before but we now all get on so well. I will keep the memories of this week with me forever.’

ACCT UK grants play a pivotal role in fostering inclusive and transformative experiences for youth. The Pyrenees expedition not only enriched cadets’ lives but also laid the foundation for future adventures, nurturing a spirit of adventure, camaraderie, and personal development within Hereford and Worcester ACF. We extend our heartfelt thanks to ACCT UK for their unwavering support in making dreams a reality for these young cadets.
