Thrills and Skills: 7th Brigade Headquarters (East) Thrive in Cyprus

17 November 2023

Cadets from the 7th Brigade Headquarters (East) supported by ACCT UK, as well as cadets from the Combined Cadet Force (Army) and the Volunteer Cadet Corps, embarked on a remarkable journey during “Exercise Venturer Coronation Jerboa (Ex-VCJ)” in Cyprus from October 21 to 29, 2023. This adventure was a multi-faceted experience, combining exciting activities, cultural exploration, and meaningful engagements with the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

The goal for the trip was to ensure that every cadet, regardless of their financial background and eligibility for Free School Meals, could get involved. This was made possible by making it financially feasible through the county’s own fundraising activities and contributions from parents. Grants, including the one from ACCT UK, made the trip a reality, making the experience not only accessible but also highly memorable.

The training and skills gained during this trip are pivotal for cadet development. The varied programme, spanned adventure training such as mountain biking and hill walking in the Troodos Mountains, with engagement military skills with the Resident Infantry Battalion and The RAF Regiment. All formed a strong foundation for personal growth, cultivating vital qualities such as leadership, teamwork, and confidence. The activities not only proved to be enjoyable but also inspired some to pursue additional qualifications.

Cultural visits and extra-curricular activities enhanced their experience, connecting them with local cadet detachments. They also participated in training with the local Episkopi cadet detachment, cultivating friendships.

The adventure carried on at Tunnel Beach Water Sports Centre, providing beach and water activity days in an excellent location. The cadets had the opportunity to try paddleboarding and kayaking, as well as high-speed boat trips along the coastline, offering a unique chance to observe Loggerhead Turtles.

“Thank you so much for giving me the most amazing experience of my life. I’ve made so many wonderful friends for life and got to experience things I didn’t think I would ever be able to experience. As this was my last cadet camp before aging out I’d like to thank each and every adult volunteer for putting in so much work to make this exercise happen and for letting me experience a once in a life time opportunity like this before leaving.”
