Supporting Young People’s Education
We supported over 1,500 Army Cadets to participate in Battlefield Tours as part of First World War remembrance commemorations, providing important life lessons for young people.
ACCT UK grants continue to support tours. Battlefield tours have a significant impact in deepening young people’s education and understanding of the First World War and other wars. Whilst on tour, Cadets are able to understand their personal connection to this important part of history by paying their respects to relatives buried at the cemeteries or recorded on memorial plaques as well as conducting short services of remembrance.
“The battlefield trip made us feel deeply emotional. Hearing about the number of deaths in school is one thing, but seeing the endless rows of graves made the true scale of the loss real for us. It gave us a much greater respect for the sacrifices made during the First World War… We are truly grateful to have been given the opportunity to go on this trip. It was an unforgettable experience that helped us understand the past in a way that no classroom ever could.”
Cadets Rodriguez Nuñez and Goodall
“I am very thankful for your funding of this trip. I hope there will be many more trips in the future so other cadets can experience this. It has helped all of us to properly understand what the soldiers went through in the war and what the war was about.”
Cadet Young
“Thank you for your funding of our trip, I have had the experience of a lifetime and I feel very proud that I had the chance to march at Menin Gate and experience placing the Poppy wreath with two other Cadets.”
Cadet Corporal Godfrey
“It was such an honour to have the opportunity to have such an extraordinary experience, to remember those who had fallen and make our mark in history for the 100th anniversary. It really made us realise how lucky we are to live the way we do as free people.”
Cadet MacLoughlin
“ACCT UK’s generous donation allowed us to travel to various memorials, sites and museums to help us learn about the battles that took place there and respect and remember the sacrifices made. It brought us as a Detachment closer together, developing teamwork and building friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.”
Cadet RSM Katie
“I made new friends, learnt more about the Great War and more… I am truly glad for joining the Army Cadet Force as I don’t know where I would be without it!”
Cadet Corporal Measey
“After seeing all the names on Thiepval Memorial of all the brave soldiers whose bodies were never recovered, it really made us realise how lucky we are to live the way we do nowadays as free people.”
