Berkshire ACF Norway Exchange 2023

3 April 2023

Berkshire Army Cadet Force (ACF) received a grant from ACCT UK to complete their biennial exchange with the HV02 District Oslo and Akershus in Norway, at the Hiestadmoen Training Camp in Telemark. Over the course of ten days, eight Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAV) and twenty-five cadets experienced Norway’s harsh winter conditions, taking part in challenging military and adventurous activities.

This exchange, which has been maintained for 31 years with the Norwegian Home Guard Youth, proved to be an incredible opportunity for cadets and CFAVs to develop new leadership skills, build confidence, and foster teamwork.

Our ACCT UK grants support Army Cadets and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers in accessing life-changing opportunities, helping to make experiences such as the Norway exchange program more affordable for all.

Throughout the exchange, the cadets had the opportunity to try their hands at military cross-country skiing on flat terrain, giving downhill skiing a go, and learning valuable lessons. These experiences enabled them to gain exposure to another country and culture, broadening their horizons and providing them with an unforgettable adventure.

Overall, Berkshire ACF’s biennial exchange with HV02 District Oslo and Akershus was an incredible success, offering an unforgettable experience that helped to develop leadership, teamwork, and a love of adventure in all who took part.

“It was a very enjoyable experience. The exercise was not for the faint-hearted, but it came with a fantastic sense of achievement once completed. The Norwegian cadets were extremely helpful, providing insight into all aspects of Norwegian life.”

“They showed incredible patience when I fell over on the skis (which was a very frequent occurrence) and were always ready to offer a helping hand. The instructors were also very supportive, and their excellent instructions made the lessons engaging.”

“The outstanding facilities made our stay more pleasant, and the food provided was delicious. This was an experience of a lifetime during which I made lots of new friends, and it’s an experience I will never forget.”

Cadet LCpl Freddie Shaw, Band, Berkshire ACF

“I really enjoyed the exchange trip to Norway as it was a good way to experience another culture as well as learning how to survive in the extreme temperatures the Norwegians face. It was amazing to meet them and see how much effort the country appears to put into learning English. All the Norwegian Home Guard Youths were really nice and helped me improve my Norwegian. I can’t wait until summer camp 2024 when they next come to visit us in the UK.”

Cadet Cpl Emily Sutherland, Band, Berkshire ACF

“During my time on the Norway exchange I learned many new skills and methods of training in harsh winter conditions. I felt that I always had the opportunity to push myself and work with the person beside me to complete tasks such as fire-building, setting up snow tents and many more experiences that would have not been possible. I feel very lucky to have been part of this exchange and will use the skills I have learned in the future.”

Cadet LCpl Leo Blayden-Ryall, Berkshire ACF

“The exchange trip was very enjoyable and successful. It taught me how to survive in the cold climate and also learn a different language. It was an unforgettable experience.”

Cadet LCpl Jennifer Alvey, Berkshire ACF
