Life-Changing International Cadet Exchange, enabled by ACCT UK Grant

3 October 2024

International Cadet Exchange

We’re pleased to have been able to support the second leg of Middlesex & NW London Sector’s international cadet exchange. This summer, a group of cadets embarked on an unforgettable journey alongside their Australian counterparts… thanks in part to a generous grant from ACCT UK.

Last year, we supported the London cadets’ trip to Australia, which you can read about here.

Breaking Down Barriers

ACCT UK’s financial support was crucial in offsetting personal contributions. This enabled cadets and adult volunteers to take part in the Battlefield Study element of the exchange programme. The grant ensured that those who might otherwise have been unable to afford the trip could share in this transformative experience.

A Journey of Discovery and Remembrance

The two-week program was packed with educational visits and poignant moments of reflection. Cadets toured prestigious military establishments such as the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the Royal Armoured Corps at Bovington. They also participated in a private act of remembrance at Westminster Abbey’s Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. This was a deeply moving experience for all involved.

The highlight for many was the four-day guided battlefield study covering the Somme and Ypres. Cadets visited significant World War I sites. These included the Thiepval Memorial, Menin Gate, and Villers Bretonneux. They gained a profound understanding of the sacrifices made by previous generations.

Personal Growth and International Friendships

The impact of this exchange programme on the cadets was immeasurable. Cadet Sebastian Hagiu said of his experience…

“ANZUK was the greatest opportunity cadets has brought to me… It was really affordable and it gave me the opportunity to communicate and make friendships with people over 10,000 miles away… I learned things on this trip that I’ve never even thought about, and I’ve experienced things I never thought would happen to me until I was older. I’m even more eager for next year. I honestly can’t wait…

Things like these are what makes cadets such a wonderful place.”

The programme broadened the cadets’ horizons and fostered lasting international friendships. Cadet LCpl Ciara Macneil shared her gratitude:

“ANZUK 2024 was one of the best opportunities I have ever received. I am truly thankful to the Trust, Forces and companies that supported this trip financially. Also to the instructors who gave up two weeks of their time to make this trip happen. They give me and everyone else the most wonderful and valuable times experienced through cadets. I am so grateful for the unbreakable friendships that I have formed that were only possible because of this.”

A Legacy of Learning and Unity

The exchange program concluded with visits to iconic locations. These included Windsor Castle and a spectacular Military Music performance on Horse Guards. The experiences have been profound for those participating.

ACCT UK’s support of this program is an example of our dedication to creating opportunities that shape the future of young people. By enabling these international exchanges, we are not only investing in individual growth. We also foster global understanding and camaraderie among the next generation of leaders.

Programmes like these play a vital role in developing well-rounded, globally aware individuals, and in preparing them to face the challenges of tomorrow.
