Northumbria ACF Marches with Purpose at Nijmegen 2025

17 September 2025

Nijmegen 2025

This year, Northumbria ACF proudly participated in one of the world’s most prestigious and enduring events… Nijmegen 2025. This epic march stretched more than 170km over four days across the Dutch countryside. It was an unforgettable challenge that tested the grit, endurance, and spirit of every cadet and adult volunteer involved.

ACCT UK helped offset personal contributions with a grant, making this remarkable journey more accessible to those dedicated to representing Northumbria ACF in the 107th Nijmegen 4DAAGSE.

Preparing for Nijmegen 2025, the Ultimate Challenge

The lead-up to Nijmegen was a testament to determination and teamwork. Seventy-five cadets and adults from Northumbria ACF came together to train rigorously for months. They prepared themselves for long-distance walks of up to 50km per day. The stakes were high, and the physical demands immense, with early starts that began as early as 2am! This ensured that all participants were ready to face each day’s challenge head-on.

Before the march itself, the teams embarked on a deeply moving Battlefield Tour. This included a wreath-laying ceremony at Arnhem Cemetery, a poignant tribute to Operation Market Garden’s heroes. This act of remembrance not only honoured history. It instilled a profound sense of purpose and respect among the cadets as they prepared for their own journey ahead.

Marching Through History and Community

The march across the scenic Dutch countryside was no ordinary walk. It was part of the legendary Nijmegen 4DAAGSE, a world-renowned event that has drawn marchers since 1909. Along the route, Northumbria’s two teams (each composed of 11 cadets and 2 Cadet Force Adult Volunteers) were greeted by thousands of enthusiastic spectators. The atmosphere buzzed with vibrant live music, festive food stalls, and heart-warming cheers, fueling every step.

Challenges came, including one unfortunate injury. However, the resilience of the teams was nothing short of inspiring. One cadet captured the resolve perfectly.

“I am so proud of myself, and have only been able to do this because of the ACF and the adults who believed in me.”

Triumph and Transformation

The final day of the march culminated in an emotional and celebratory finale as participants strode proudly along the Via Gladioli, a traditional and symbolic route, lined with cheering crowds. With medals presented at Charlemagne Fields and a special welcome from the Commandant, who came out to meet the teams in person, the sense of accomplishment was tangible.

Among the success stories, Cadet Sgt Tansey’s journey stood out. Having completed his third Nijmegen march, he is now venturing into higher education in mechanical engineering at Lancaster University. He subsequently aims to continue his leadership journey by going to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

“I never thought I could achieve this in the Cadets. I may just have to come and complete it as an adult!”
