Skiiing in Norway rock

Cadet Staff Sergeant Harrison Murphy from 2nd NI Battalion Army Cadet Force yearned to go skiing in Norway. But the cost was a big obstacle. Thanks to a grant from ACCT NI, his dream became a reality.

A Chance to Speak Up and Get Support

Harrison first heard about ACCT UK when his Battalion chose them as their main charity. The charity had already helped support parachuting and skiing events. Skiing in Norway was expensive, and the Battalion couldn’t cover the full cost. Harrison spoke to his Detachment Commander, who suggested applying for a grant to help with the expenses.

The grant helped reduce Harrison’s individual cost by £250. This made all the difference. Without it, he might not have been able to take part.

Skiing in Norway: An Experience Like No Other

With the grant in place, Harrison joined the CCAT EX Telemark Challenge 25 in Norway. It was a new style of skiing for him. He said:

“I had the best experience ever in Norway doing a new style of skiing that many people don’t get to try. To see the scenery and breathe in the fresh Nordic air whilst challenging myself physically was amazing.”

As is so often the case, this expedition was more than just skiing. It pushed Harrison to try something new and to test his limits.

Making Friends and Building Confidence

Harrison admits he was nervous about meeting new people. But the course helped him come out of his shell. He said:

“I was quite nervous about speaking to people but I really enjoyed the course. I would recommend this to any senior cadet that loves the outdoors.”

Thanks to ACCT UK, the cost of this training was much lower than usual. This made it possible for Harrison to meet new friends and improve his skills in a stunning setting.

Harrison’s story shows how important grants like this are. They open doors for young people who might not otherwise get these opportunities. This experience gave him confidence, new skills, and memories that will last a lifetime.

He sums it up simply:

“Eat Sleep Ski Repeat.”

Supporting More Young People

Our grants help young people grow, learn, and connect. If you want to help more cadets like Harrison have these amazing experiences, consider supporting ACCT UK.

Together, we can make sure more young people get to explore, challenge themselves, and enjoy the great outdoors.
